Irfan Pathan Questions Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy After Mumbai Indians’ Defeat

Irfan Pathan criticises Hardik Pandya as Mumbai Indians struggle after another IPL defeat.

Hardik Pandya’s leadership of the Mumbai Indians has come under intense scrutiny following the team’s defeat to the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League 2026. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan offered a sharp critique of Pandya’s captaincy, suggesting that the all-rounder appeared unsettled under pressure and needed to improve his game management.

Despite a standout century from Quinton de Kock, Mumbai Indians failed to secure victory due to a lackluster bowling performance. Punjab Kings comfortably chased down the target, thanks to key contributions from Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer. The loss marked Mumbai’s fourth defeat in five matches, leaving them struggling near the bottom of the points table in ninth place.

Pathan highlighted concerns over Pandya’s recent individual performances, noting a dip in batting returns and limited impact with the ball. He pointed out that Pandya’s batting average since 2024 has hovered in the early 20s, well below expectations for a player of his caliber. Additionally, Pathan emphasized the need for more effective bowling during the powerplay overs, stating that Pandya appeared “worried” when the team was under pressure.

The former cricketer also criticized Mumbai Indians’ overall bowling unit, arguing that the team lacked enough genuine wicket-taking options. He noted that players like Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar have struggled to contain runs, while premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah has yet to claim a wicket this season. According to Pathan, relying on too few effective bowlers has made it difficult for the team to apply consistent pressure on opponents.

Following the defeat, Pandya acknowledged the team’s struggles and hinted at potential changes. He admitted that Mumbai Indians need to reassess both individual and collective performances, including planning and execution. The captain also stressed the importance of players taking responsibility for the team’s disappointing run.

With the tournament still in its early stages, Mumbai Indians face mounting pressure to reverse their fortunes. Pandya’s remarks about taking “difficult calls” suggest that changes in team composition or strategy could be imminent as the franchise looks to salvage its campaign.
