IPL 2026: RCB Views Jitesh Sharma’s Poor Form As Strategic Advantage

RCB sees Jitesh Sharma’s poor form as strategic advantage.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru missed a key opportunity in the IPL 2026 points table race after suffering a narrow nine-run defeat against Lucknow Super Giants on May 7. Despite entering the contest as favourites following a strong run of four consecutive successful chases, RCB faltered at a crucial stage against a struggling LSG side that had been languishing at the bottom of the standings.

Chasing a competitive target, RCB’s innings showed moments of resistance but lacked consistency through the middle overs. Skipper Rajat Patidar led the charge with a blistering 61, while Tim David provided late fireworks with a rapid 40 off just 17 deliveries. However, the team fell short by nine runs, unable to sustain momentum in the closing stages of the chase despite promising contributions.

Lucknow Super Giants’ bowling unit played a decisive role in turning the game in their favour. Prince Yadav delivered a standout spell, finishing with figures of 3 for 33, and made a major impact by dismissing Virat Kohli for a second-ball duck. The performance helped LSG secure a vital win, ending their six-match winless run and strengthening their position in a must-win phase of the tournament.

Amid RCB’s defeat, attention shifted towards the underwhelming form of wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma and opener Jacob Bethell. Both players have struggled to deliver consistent performances this season, contributing to a dip in RCB’s overall batting stability despite strong contributions from other members of the lineup.

Former India cricketer Murali Kartik noted that Jitesh Sharma’s lean patch could ironically work in RCB’s favour, suggesting that such phases often force players to reset and regain clarity. The observation comes amid growing scrutiny of RCB’s middle-order balance as the tournament progresses.

Jitesh Sharma, who had a strong debut season for RCB after being acquired for INR 11 crore ahead of IPL 2025, previously scored 261 runs in 15 matches and played a key role as a finisher in their maiden title-winning campaign. His form also earned him a recall to India’s T20I setup, where he contributed during the 2025 Asia Cup triumph and the 3-1 series win over South Africa later that year.
