IPL 2026: KKR Star Spinners Chakaravarthy, Narine Miss Match Against PBKS

KKR star spinners Chakaravarthy, Narine absent; Powell and Saini take their spots.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Eden Gardens as star spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine have been ruled out. Chakaravarthy is sidelined due to an injury, while Narine is unavailable because he is unwell. Both players have been key figures in KKR’s bowling lineup in previous seasons.

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, who won the toss and elected to bat, confirmed the spinners’ absence. Their spots were filled by West Indies all-rounder Rovman Powell and Indian pacer Navdeep Saini, neither of whom are spinners. Analysts noted that this adjustment could affect KKR’s ability to control the middle overs, particularly against a strong batting lineup like PBKS.

The absence of Chakaravarthy and Narine compounds KKR’s struggles this season. The two spinners have taken just one wicket between them in the ongoing campaign, contributing to the team’s shaky start after losing their first two matches. With an inexperienced bowling attack, the franchise faces pressure to deliver a competitive performance tonight.

KKR’s playing XI for the match includes Finn Allen, Ajinkya Rahane (C), Cameron Green, Angkrish Raghuvanshi (WK), Rovman Powell, Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Anukul Roy, Navdeep Saini, Vaibhav Arora, and Kartik Tyagi. Their Impact Player bench features Manish Pandey, Tejasvi Singh, Rahul Tripathi, Saurabh Dubey, and Blessing Muzarabani.

Punjab Kings have named Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (C), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh, and Yuzvendra Chahal in their playing XI. Their Impact Player bench includes Suryansh Shedge, Vishnu Vinod, Pravin Dubey, Priyansh Arya, and Harpreet Brar.

Chakaravarthy and Narine have historically been linchpins of KKR’s spin attack, providing both control and wicket-taking ability in crucial overs. Their absence tonight highlights the team’s vulnerability in the bowling department and sets up a challenging encounter against the high-flying PBKS. Analysts believe tonight’s match will test KKR’s adaptability and the depth of their squad.
