IPL 2026: Jofra Archer Takes First-Ball Wicket As RR Start Strong Against KKR

Archer strikes first ball again as RR dominate start.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) endured early setbacks in their IPL 2026 clash against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Eden Gardens, as Jofra Archer struck with a first-ball wicket for the third consecutive match, putting immediate pressure on the home side’s chase.

Chasing a target set by RR, KKR’s innings suffered an early blow with Archer removing an opener on the very first delivery he bowled, continuing his remarkable recent streak of opening-over breakthroughs. The wicket added to KKR’s growing concerns in a season already marked by inconsistency and poor form.

Earlier in the match, Rajasthan Royals posted a modest total after being restricted by a strong KKR bowling performance. RR had begun aggressively, with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi putting together an 81-run partnership that briefly put the visitors in control. However, the momentum shifted sharply once KKR introduced spin into the attack.

The duo of Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine played a crucial role in turning the game around, applying consistent pressure and triggering a middle-order collapse. Their efforts ensured RR were pulled back from a strong position, with additional late wickets further restricting the scoring rate. Kartik Tyagi also contributed with key breakthroughs in the closing stages, helping KKR limit Rajasthan to a below-par total.

Despite the bowling recovery, KKR’s batting unit once again came under scrutiny as they began their chase under pressure. The team, already struggling with form and confidence this season, entered the match on the back of multiple losses and a lack of rhythm, with little recovery time between fixtures.

Rajasthan, meanwhile, came into the match looking to rebound after a previous collapse against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where their top order had fallen cheaply. However, their strong opening batting display in this game suggested a return to form, even if they failed to capitalise fully in the middle and death overs.

KKR’s campaign has also been impacted by ongoing team adjustments, including the potential inclusion of Matheesha Pathirana, which could bolster their pace attack. However, with the batting unit underperforming and pressure mounting, the team faces an uphill task as the chase progresses at Eden Gardens.
