IPL 2026: Harsha Bhogle Analyses Mumbai Indians’ Poor Run Under Hardik Pandya
MI struggle in IPL 2026 under Hardik Pandya leadership.
Mumbai Indians’ difficult run in IPL 2026 has triggered widespread debate over Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, with the five-time champions now on the verge of elimination after another heavy defeat to Chennai Super Kings. The loss marked MI’s seventh defeat in nine matches, deepening concerns over leadership, team balance, and overall direction in one of the tournament’s most high-profile franchises.
In their latest outing, Mumbai Indians were restricted to 159/7 after batting first, with Naman Dhir’s fighting half-century standing out as the only significant contribution. However, the total proved insufficient as Chennai Super Kings chased it down comfortably with 11 balls remaining and eight wickets in hand, exposing MI’s lack of penetration with the ball and inconsistency in execution.
Despite possessing a star-studded squad featuring Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Tilak Varma, Mumbai Indians have failed to convert individual talent into collective performance. The repeated failures have placed their playoff hopes in serious jeopardy, raising questions about whether the current leadership structure is effectively managing pressure situations in IPL 2026.

Cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle offered a sharp assessment of MI’s struggles, expressing surprise at the extent of the team’s collapse this season. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Bhogle said he did not expect a side of Mumbai Indians’ calibre—stacked with international stars—to unravel in such a manner. He suggested that while Bumrah has performed consistently, other key players have not delivered at the expected level.
Bhogle further added that one possible factor could be the burden of reputation in modern T20 cricket, where past success does not guarantee current performance. He also raised the question of internal alignment within the squad, implying that a lack of cohesion may be affecting on-field results. Importantly, he pointed out that Hardik Pandya’s captaincy experiment, now in its third season, has yielded only one playoff appearance, suggesting that the leadership model may not be producing desired outcomes in IPL 2026.
Former India batter Manoj Tiwary, however, defended Pandya, arguing that it would be unfair to single out the captain for the team’s struggles. He suggested that effective leadership requires collective backing from the entire dressing room, and indicated that such support may currently be missing within the MI setup. As Mumbai Indians edge closer to an early exit from IPL 2026, scrutiny around their management, strategy, and leadership is expected to intensify. For a franchise historically associated with dominance and consistency, this season has emerged as one of its most challenging campaigns in recent years.
