Injured Cummins Out of IPL 2026 Opener: Ishan Kishan to Lead SRH

Cummins misses IPL 2026 opener; Ishan Kishan takes over SRH captaincy.

SunRisers Hyderabad have confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will miss the initial phase of the Indian Premier League 2026 due to a back injury, prompting the franchise to appoint a new leader for the opening matches. The announcement was made on Wednesday, with the team stating that Cummins is expected to sit out “a few games” as he continues his recovery. The absence of the Australian pacer comes as a setback for the 2016 champions ahead of a crucial start to the season.

In Cummins’ absence, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been named captain of the side, marking a significant leadership role in his IPL career. Kishan, who previously led Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, will now take charge of a star-studded Hyderabad squad. The franchise has also appointed opener Abhishek Sharma as vice-captain, indicating a leadership group built around young and dynamic players.

Cummins’ injury has been an ongoing concern, with the fast bowler also missing the recently concluded ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 due to the same issue. As one of Australia’s premier bowlers and captain in both ODI and Test formats, his absence is not only a blow to SRH but also raises questions about workload management for international cricketers participating in franchise leagues.

The Australian pacer had taken over the SRH captaincy ahead of the 2024 season and made an immediate impact by guiding the team to Qualifier 2. However, the following season saw a dip in performance, with the team finishing sixth in the standings. Despite this, Cummins’ leadership has been credited with stabilizing the side and building a competitive core for the future.

SRH’s strength, however, lies heavily in its explosive batting lineup, which includes players such as Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen, and Liam Livingstone. Over the past two seasons, the team has broken multiple batting records, with aggressive opening partnerships and high-scoring games becoming a hallmark of their approach. Fans will be hoping the team continues its attacking style despite the leadership change.

The franchise has assembled a balanced squad for IPL 2026, combining experienced internationals and promising domestic talent. Alongside key names like Cummins, Head, and Klaasen, the team features players such as Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat, and emerging talents across departments. As the season approaches, all eyes will be on how Kishan adapts to captaincy and whether SRH can maintain momentum until Cummins returns to lead the side later in the tournament.
