India Great Drops Rs 14.20 Crore Star From Ideal CSK XI For IPL 2026

14.20 crore star snubbed from CSK XI IPL 2026

Former India opener and 1983 World Cup winner Krishnamachari Srikkanth has stirred debate by snubbing one of Chennai Super Kings’ record-breaking auction purchases in his ideal playing XI for the upcoming IPL 2026 season.Srikkanth, a former CSK mentor and selector with deep ties to the franchise, left out 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma, who was acquired for a whopping Rs 14.20 crore during the IPL 2026 mini-auction in Abu Dhabi. Sharma, an uncapped talent from Rajasthan, became one of the joint-most expensive uncapped Indian players in IPL history alongside all-rounder Prashant Veer. Many viewed him as a long-term successor to MS Dhoni in the middle order, but Srikkanth opted for a different combination.

In his preferred XI, Srikkanth backed an explosive top order with Sanju Samson (recent T20 World Cup winner) and young sensation Ayush Mhatre opening the innings. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad slots in at No. 3, followed by Urvil Patel at No. 4. The middle order features explosive overseas batter Dewald Brevis, power-hitter Shivam Dube, and veteran MS Dhoni. Left-arm spin all-rounder Prashant Veer, the other Rs 14.20 crore signing, earns a place for his Jadeja-like balance of big hitting and spin bowling.

The bowling attack in Srikkanth’s line-up includes Afghan mystery spinner Noor Ahmad, New Zealand pacer Matt Henry, and India left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed, with Rahul Chahar named as the Impact Player. The selection keeps only three overseas players in the XI — Brevis, Henry, and Noor Ahmad — adhering to IPL rules while leaving out other overseas options such as Akeal Hosein and domestic talents like Sarfaraz Khan and Anshul Kamboj.

Srikkanth’s bold picks come just days before IPL 2026 kicks off on March 28, with CSK scheduled to begin their campaign on March 30. The franchise has undergone significant rebuilding after a disappointing previous season, retaining core players like Gaikwad and Dhoni while investing heavily in youth through the auction. Samson’s arrival via trade and the high-stakes buys of Veer and Sharma signal CSK’s intent to blend experience with fresh talent.

Cricket observers note that expert opinions like Srikkanth’s often highlight selection dilemmas facing CSK’s think tank, especially around the wicketkeeping and middle-order roles where competition is fierce. While Kartik Sharma’s exclusion has raised eyebrows given the massive investment, it underscores that auction price tags do not guarantee immediate spots in a balanced, winning XI. CSK supporters and analysts await the team’s official combinations as the five-time champions aim to reclaim their glory in the 2026 edition.
