Harsh Dubey Receives First India Call-Up Amid Strong IPL 2026 Performances
Harsh Dubey earns maiden India call-up during IPL 2026 season.
Rookie spin-bowling all-rounder Harsh Dubey has said he is focused on building his own identity in Indian cricket rather than being viewed as a direct replacement for any senior player, following his maiden call-up to the national team for the upcoming Afghanistan series. Dubey, a 23-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner from Vidarbha, has been named in India’s squad for a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series.
The selection marks a major milestone in his career after consistent performances across domestic cricket and a productive Indian Premier League stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad. National selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar clarified that Dubey is being considered as a long-term prospect for Indian cricket. He also noted that senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has only been rested for the Afghanistan Test, underscoring that Dubey’s inclusion is part of future planning rather than immediate succession.
Responding to his selection, Dubey said he is not carrying the pressure of comparisons and is instead concentrating on performing his role whenever he gets an opportunity. “I am not looking to replace anyone. I worked hard for this opportunity and my hard work is the reason why I am here today,” he said. He added that his focus remains on consistency and contributing to team success rather than projecting too far into the future.

Dubey, who has taken 198 wickets across formats in 95 matches, emphasised that he is treating the potential international debut like any other match. He said he does not want to overthink expectations and prefers to rely on his preparation and natural game. In first-class cricket, Dubey has taken 133 wickets, including nine five-wicket hauls and two ten-wicket match performances, while also contributing over 1,000 runs. His ability with the bat has strengthened his reputation as a genuine all-rounder, having scored nine half-centuries with an average just under 27.
Reflecting on his IPL experience, Dubey said playing eight matches in the latest season helped him sharpen his skills at a higher level of competition. He also expressed gratitude to his parents for supporting his cricketing journey, adding that his selection is the result of sustained hard work and commitment. Dubey concluded by advising young cricketers to focus on team contribution and give their best in every opportunity, rather than being driven by individual expectations or comparisons with established players.
