Haaland Reflects on Norway's Run After 2-1 Loss to England
Haaland reflects on Norway's World Cup run after England defeat.
Norway striker Erling Haaland expressed pride in his team's FIFA World Cup campaign despite their heartbreaking 2-1 extra-time defeat to England in the quarter-finals on Saturday, saying the tournament had put Norwegian football firmly on the global map. The Manchester City forward said Norway's performances had inspired a new generation of footballers and demonstrated that the country could compete with the world's elite. The defeat ended Norway's best World Cup run in 28 years after an impressive campaign in the United States.
Haaland failed to score for the first time in 15 competitive appearances for Norway as England advanced to the semi-finals through Jude Bellingham's match-winning brace. However, the 25-year-old enjoyed a remarkable tournament, scoring seven goals in five matches, including a match-winning double against Brazil in the Round of 16 that helped Norway eliminate the five-time world champions. His performances established him as one of the standout players of the tournament despite the team's exit.
Reflecting on Norway's achievement, Haaland said the team's greatest accomplishment was inspiring belief among young footballers back home. He expressed hope that the World Cup campaign would become the foundation for sustained success in future European Championships and World Cups. According to Haaland, Norway possesses an outstanding generation of players capable of competing consistently at the highest level, and the experience gained from this tournament should motivate aspiring footballers across the country.

Haaland also acknowledged the growing international attention he received throughout the tournament, particularly from football fans in the United States. He admitted it had been difficult to fully absorb the emotions of the six-week journey but believed the experience would transform both Norwegian football and his own career. The striker said the challenge now was to build on the momentum created by the team's historic campaign and establish Norway among the world's leading football nations.
The Norwegian captain reserved special praise for England midfielder Jude Bellingham, his former Borussia Dortmund teammate, after the Real Madrid star scored both goals that ended Norway's World Cup dream. Haaland described Bellingham as one of the best footballers in the world, highlighting his ability to score, dribble and influence matches from midfield. He added that every national team would be fortunate to have a player of Bellingham's quality.
Haaland was substituted during extra time after struggling with fatigue, a dead leg and the intense Miami heat, despite Norway chasing an equaliser. Head coach Stale Solbakken later admitted he may have kept his star striker on the field for too long, praising Haaland for giving everything throughout the tournament. Solbakken described his captain's return of seven goals in five matches as a fantastic World Cup and credited him for leading Norway to one of the country's finest performances on the global stage.
