GT Defeat PBKS in Last-Over IPL 2026 Clash After Washington Sundar Finishes Chase

Shubman Gill backs Washington Sundar as GT defeat PBKS in last-over IPL thriller.

Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill praised Washington Sundar’s composure after his side secured a tense last-over victory against Punjab Kings in an IPL 2026 thriller on Sunday. The win helped Gujarat Titans earn two crucial points against the table-toppers, in a match that went down to the final ball despite earlier control shifts across both innings.

Gill admitted that his team would have preferred a more comfortable chase but acknowledged the difficulty of the surface, which made stroke-making challenging throughout the game. Punjab Kings had posted 163 for 9 after being put under pressure by Gujarat’s bowling attack, but Titans managed to cross the line with a single ball remaining, finishing at 167 for 6 in a nervy finish.

Speaking after the match, Gill said the pitch conditions made it impossible to chase the target aggressively in the initial overs. He explained that the surface did not allow batters to take early risks and emphasized the importance of backing set players to bat deep into the innings. According to him, Gujarat’s strategy revolved around patience rather than an early acceleration push.Gill also highlighted Washington Sundar’s role in the chase, calling him the “best batter” in the situation due to his ability to stay calm under pressure and finish the innings. Sundar’s composure at the end proved decisive as Gujarat navigated the final over successfully, turning a tense scenario into a winning moment.

Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer, meanwhile, expressed disappointment at the result but maintained that his team had initially set a defendable total. He pointed out that early movement with the new ball and variable bounce made batting difficult, but credited his bowlers for their disciplined effort in restricting Gujarat Titans for long phases of the chase.Iyer noted that Punjab’s batting collapse in the powerplay proved costly, though he praised the recovery effort that took them to a competitive score.

He admitted that execution with the ball fell short in key moments, especially in hitting the right lengths consistently on a tricky surface.Despite the loss, Iyer remained optimistic about Punjab Kings’ position at the top of the table, stressing that the team’s character and intent remained strong. He added that if the side continued to maintain its attitude and work ethic, results would follow in the remainder of the tournament. The match once again highlighted the fine margins in IPL 2026, where momentum shifts rapidly and individual composure under pressure continues to define outcomes in tightly contested encounters.
