Gill And Suryakumar Reportedly Miss Asian Games Plan, Sooryavanshi In Focus
Senior absences may strengthen Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Asian Games chances.
Teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has received a significant boost in his early international prospects after being included in India’s 30-member probables list for the men’s cricket competition at the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The inclusion comes on the back of a standout IPL 2026 season, where he reportedly amassed 776 runs in 16 matches, drawing attention from national selectors.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has submitted the probables list to the Indian Olympic Association ahead of the tournament scheduled from September 19 to October 4. The Asian Games cricket event itself will run from September 24 to October 3, overlapping with India’s home white-ball series against the West Indies, which runs from September 27 to October 17.
Due to this scheduling clash, the BCCI is expected to field two separate T20 squads. While one team will compete at the Asian Games, another will be engaged in the home series, requiring selectors to draw from a wider pool of players and manage workload distribution across formats and tours.

Notably absent from the Asian Games longlist are India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav and Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill. Gill is expected to focus on the ODI assignment against the West Indies, while reports suggest Suryakumar is not part of India’s long-term planning for upcoming global events.
The leadership race for the Asian Games squad is expected to be among Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma, with selectors yet to finalise the captain. The provisional list also includes senior names such as Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, although final selections will depend on workload management and format priorities.
The longlist reflects a mix of established internationals and emerging talent as India prepares for a packed cricketing calendar. Selectors are expected to trim the squad closer to the event, balancing immediate tournament requirements with long-term planning for upcoming global competitions.
