LSG Heavily Reliant On Overseas Batters, Says Former CSK Star
Ex-CSK star questions LSG’s dependence on overseas batters for runs.
Former Chennai Super Kings pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji delivered a stark assessment of Lucknow Super Giants' IPL 2026 squad, warning their heavy dependence on overseas batters could undermine title hopes as the tournament kicks off March 28. Balaji, speaking on Jio Hotstar, highlighted LSG's top-order reliance on Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran, who delivered consistent starts last season but exposed vulnerabilities in domestic depth.
After a seventh-place finish in 2025, the Rishabh Pant-led side opens against Delhi Capitals at Ekana Stadium on April 1, with Balaji urging Indian players like Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Pant to shoulder more responsibility.
"They definitely depend heavily on their overseas trio of batters," Balaji noted, praising the stacked top three that out-batted opponents repeatedly but flagging bowling, captaincy, and tactics as lingering concerns. He advocated a balanced overseas mix—Marsh, Markram, and Pooran as batting locks—while prioritizing Wanindu Hasaranga's spin if fit, or Anrich Nortje as a pace alternative for the fourth slot.
LSG's auction picks, including Josh Inglis and Matthew Breetzke, bolster overseas options, yet Balaji emphasized Pant's leadership evolution post his white-ball team omission. The franchise's failure to maximize Indian middle-order firepower mirrors broader IPL trends where domestic consistency separates contenders from also-rans.

This critique arrives amid IPL 2026's packed schedule, with LSG aiming for a maiden title under heightened scrutiny. Balaji's verdict underscores strategic risks in an era of four-overseas limits, where over-reliance on imports has sunk past campaigns. As franchises finalize XIs amid player fitness doubts, LSG faces pressure to diversify beyond its foreign firepower or risk another playoff miss.
