Ex-Punjab Kings Coach Reveals Rare Moment When KL Rahul Showed His Angrier Side

Former Indian cricketer and coach Wasim Jaffer has revealed an incident involving KL Rahul’s frustration during his captaincy stint with Punjab Kings (PBKS), saying that the batter’s anger was visible when the team repeatedly lost matches from winning positions. Jaffer said that such defeats affected Rahul deeply, as the team’s inability to close out tight games became a major source of disappointment for the captain. Rahul represented PBKS, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, from 2018 to 2021 and led the franchise during his entire stint with the team.

During the same period, Jaffer served as the team’s head coach from 2019 to 2021, giving him a close view of Rahul’s leadership style and his approach towards team performances. Speaking about Rahul’s time as captain, Jaffer said that the only occasions when he saw the usually calm batter lose his temper were after disappointing team results. According to Jaffer, Rahul was particularly frustrated when PBKS dominated large parts of matches but failed to convert those advantages into victories. Close defeats and missed opportunities reportedly affected him more than ordinary losses.

Rahul’s individual performances during his PBKS years were among the highlights of the team’s campaign. In the 2020 IPL season, he delivered one of the best batting performances of the tournament, scoring 670 runs in 14 matches at an average of 55.83 and a strike rate of 129.34. His campaign included one century and five half-centuries, earning him the Orange Cap for being the season’s leading run-scorer. Despite Rahul’s outstanding batting numbers, PBKS struggled to achieve consistent success under his leadership. The team finished sixth among eight teams in both the 2020 and 2021 IPL seasons, missing out on playoff qualification.

The gap between individual performances and team results became a major talking point during Rahul’s captaincy period. Jaffer explained that Rahul’s frustration came from his desire to see the team perform better rather than from personal disappointment. As a leader and one of the franchise’s most important players, Rahul carried significant responsibility, and losing matches that appeared within PBKS’s control was difficult for him to accept. During Rahul’s tenure, PBKS often found themselves involved in closely contested games but struggled with consistency in crucial moments. The team’s inability to finish matches effectively remained one of the biggest challenges during those seasons, despite having strong individual performers in the squad.

After his time with PBKS, Rahul moved to Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the 2022 IPL season and took on another leadership role. His career has continued to be marked by strong batting performances and captaincy responsibilities across franchise and international cricket. Jaffer’s comments provide insight into Rahul’s competitive nature and his commitment as a leader. While he is often known for his composed personality on the field, the former coach’s account highlights the emotional investment Rahul had in helping his team succeed and the disappointment he felt when results did not match expectations.
