Egypt Coach Questions Officiating After Narrow FIFA World Cup Loss To Lionel Messi's Argentina

Egypt coach alleges unfair treatment after Argentina defeat.

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan launched a scathing attack on the match officiating after his side's dramatic 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, claiming his team had been "cheated" out of a place in the quarter-finals. Egypt surrendered a two-goal lead as Lionel Messi inspired Argentina's remarkable comeback, but Hassan insisted key refereeing decisions and VAR interventions played a decisive role in the outcome.

Addressing reporters after the match, Hassan expressed his frustration over several controversial incidents, accusing officials of denying Egypt a fair opportunity to progress. "I do not want to put it nicely and talk about hard luck. We have been cheated unfairly today, we have suffered injustice," he said. The Egypt coach argued that crucial decisions consistently went against his team and questioned the application of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system during the knockout encounter.

One of the biggest talking points came in the first half when Mostafa Zico had a goal disallowed after VAR intervened to identify a foul on Argentina defender Lisandro Martínez earlier in the build-up. Despite the setback, Zico later restored Egypt's momentum by scoring again to double his side's lead, putting the Pharaohs on the brink of reaching the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history. However, Argentina responded strongly as Cristian Romero pulled one back before Lionel Messi, who had earlier missed a penalty after his spot-kick was saved, scored the equaliser with his eighth goal of the tournament.

The controversy continued in the closing stages when Enzo Fernández netted Argentina's winning goal. Egypt believed they should instead have been awarded a penalty in the build-up after Alexis Mac Allister was alleged to have pulled Hamdy Fathy's shirt inside the penalty area. Hassan claimed the incident was not properly reviewed by VAR and questioned why officials did not intervene. "We haven't seen respect or fair play. There has not been respect or fair play," he said, adding, "A penalty was ruled out, was not even checked by VAR. A second goal was remarkably disallowed.

There has not even been a VAR check when we have all seen the image of the shirt being pulled back." The Egyptian coach's criticism extended beyond the individual decisions, as he suggested the integrity of the officiating had undermined his team's World Cup campaign. Hassan said he was so disappointed by what transpired that he no longer intended to follow the remainder of the tournament. "I am not going to continue following the matches of this World Cup, watching the matches of this World Cup. This is my own way of speaking up," he said.

Argentina's victory secured a place in the quarter-finals, where Lionel Messi and his teammates will continue their title defence. Egypt, meanwhile, exited the tournament despite producing one of their strongest performances of the competition. While Argentina celebrated a memorable comeback, Hassan's remarks ensured that debate over the refereeing and the use of VAR would remain one of the major talking points following the dramatic Round of 16 encounter.
