Delhi Capitals Captain Axar Patel Fined Rs 12 Lakh for Slow Over Rate Against Punjab Kings

Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over rate in win against Punjab Kings.

Axar Patel, captain of Delhi Capitals, has been fined Rs 12 lakh by the Board of Control for Cricket in India after his side maintained a slow over rate during their Indian Premier League match against Punjab Kings. The penalty was imposed following Delhi Capitals’ three-wicket victory over Punjab Kings at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on Monday. The win kept Delhi’s slim playoff hopes alive in the ongoing IPL 2026 season.

According to an official IPL media advisory, the fine was imposed under Article 2.22 of the tournament’s Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate offences. Officials clarified that this was Delhi Capitals’ first over-rate violation of the season, resulting in a monetary penalty for captain Axar Patel. The IPL has enforced stricter regulations in recent seasons regarding slow over rates, with captains and teams facing fines and, in repeated cases, additional sanctions if matches exceed the permitted time limits.

Despite the disciplinary action, Axar played a key role in Delhi Capitals’ successful run chase. Chasing a challenging target of 211 runs, Delhi found themselves in trouble at 74 for four before Axar launched a counter-attacking innings of 56 runs off 33 balls. He shared a crucial partnership with David Miller, who scored 51 off 28 deliveries, helping stabilise the innings and shift momentum back in Delhi’s favour. Lower-order contributions from Ashutosh Sharma and Madhav Tiwari later ensured the chase was completed in just 19 overs.

Earlier in the match, Punjab Kings posted 210 for five after a strong batting performance led by opener Priyansh Arya, who scored 56 off 33 balls. He and Prabhsimran Singh provided a rapid start with a 78-run opening stand. Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer then anchored the innings with an unbeaten 59 off 36 deliveries, while Cooper Connolly added 38 runs. However, despite crossing the 200-run mark, Punjab Kings were unable to accelerate as effectively in the closing overs as they had hoped.

Delhi Capitals’ bowlers managed to pull things back in the latter half of the innings. Mitchell Starc picked up two wickets, including consecutive dismissals in the 19th over, while young all-rounder Madhav Tiwari also claimed two wickets and later contributed with the bat. Punjab’s innings ended at 210 for five, a total that initially appeared competitive on the Dharamshala surface. For Punjab Kings, bowlers including Arshdeep Singh, Ben Dwarshuis, and Marcus Stoinis managed wickets but struggled to contain Delhi’s aggressive middle-order recovery.

The latest penalty adds Axar Patel to the growing list of IPL captains penalised this season for slow over-rate offences, an issue that has repeatedly drawn attention from tournament organisers. Over-rate management has become increasingly difficult in high-scoring T20 matches due to frequent strategic discussions, reviews, injuries, and extended batting partnerships. IPL authorities have continued to emphasise timely completion of matches to maintain broadcast schedules and playing standards. While the fine does not affect Delhi Capitals’ points tally, the team will remain under closer scrutiny for any future over-rate violations during the remainder of the tournament.
