CSK vs GT : Gaikwad's Fifty Ignites Chennai After Early Wicket Losses in Powerplay

Ruturaj Gaikwad scores the first fifty of IPL 2026; CSK is at 122/6 against Gujarat Titans.

Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad produced a timely half-century against Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2026 clash, registering his first fifty of the season after a prolonged lean run. At 122/6 after 18 overs, CSK were relying heavily on their skipper to rebuild the innings after early wickets disrupted the hosts on Sunday evening at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

CSK’s innings began poorly as Gujarat’s pace attack applied immediate pressure. Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj struck in the powerplay, removing key batters and restricting scoring opportunities. Chennai lost three wickets in the opening overs, placing the middle order under pressure on a surface where stroke-making was not entirely straightforward.

Gaikwad initially struggled for rhythm and consumed deliveries while trying to stabilise the innings. However, once set, the CSK captain shifted gears dramatically, launching into an over featuring boundaries in rapid succession. The burst of 4, 6, 4 energised the crowd and changed the momentum of the innings. He eventually reached his half-century in 49 balls, balancing caution with late aggression when his side needed acceleration.

With Jamie Overton at the crease alongside him, CSK aimed for a competitive finish in the final overs. Given the slow start and top-order collapse, every additional run in the closing phase carried added value. Gaikwad’s knock was not only important statistically but also significant emotionally, as it ended his early-season struggle for consistency.

The innings could prove a turning point in both the match and Gaikwad’s campaign. Chennai entered the contest needing momentum in the league stage, while their captain required a confidence-boosting contribution. His measured recovery followed by explosive hitting offered exactly that.

For Gujarat Titans, the task remained to restrict Chennai below a defendable total and capitalise with the bat later. For CSK, much depended on whether Gaikwad’s rescue act could carry them to a score their bowlers could defend at Chepauk.
