CSK Captain Fined As Entire Team Faces Action After IPL 2026 Game
CSK captain fined as entire team faces disciplinary action after IPL 2026 final game.
Chennai Super Kings suffered a double setback after their final Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match against Gujarat Titans, with the franchise not only enduring an 89-run defeat that ended their playoff hopes but also receiving disciplinary action from the IPL Governing Council for a slow over-rate offence.
The sanction followed a heavy loss at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where Chennai Super Kings were bundled out of contention in their pursuit of a 230-run target. The team struggled throughout the innings, losing early wickets and failing to build partnerships, with only Shivam Dube offering resistance through a quick 47 off 17 balls. The collapse ensured a comprehensive defeat and confirmed CSK’s exit from the tournament.
Following the match, the IPL Governing Council imposed penalties for failing to complete their overs within the stipulated time. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was fined ₹24 lakh as it marked the team’s second slow-over rate offence of the season under the IPL Code of Conduct. The rest of the playing XI, including the impact substitute, were also fined ₹6 lakh each or 25 per cent of their match fees, whichever was lower.

The disciplinary action comes at the end of a difficult campaign for Chennai Super Kings, who struggled with inconsistency throughout the season. Their batting unit failed to deliver consistently, while their bowling attack was often unable to contain opposition teams in high-scoring encounters, particularly against top-tier batting line-ups like Gujarat Titans.
The defeat and subsequent penalties have intensified scrutiny around CSK’s squad composition and leadership structure heading into the next season. With long-time leader MS Dhoni’s future still uncertain and several senior players underperforming, the franchise is expected to consider significant changes as it looks to rebuild for IPL 2027.
