Cooper Connolly Moves Past Sanath Jayasuriya In IPL 2026 Record List Despite PBKS Loss

Cooper Connolly surpasses Sanath Jayasuriya in IPL list despite PBKS losing streak.

Punjab Kings’ Punjab Kings endured another setback in IPL 2026 as they suffered their sixth consecutive defeat, going down by 23 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a high-scoring encounter that featured multiple standout individual performances. Despite the team loss, young Australian batter Cooper Connolly created a notable statistical milestone, surpassing a long-standing record held by Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya for the most sixes hit in a debut IPL season.

Batting first, Royal Challengers Bengaluru posted a formidable total of 222 for 4 after early loss of Jacob Bethell for 11. The innings was anchored by Virat Kohli, who scored 58 off 37 balls, while Devdutt Padikkal contributed 45 off 25 deliveries. The platform was further strengthened by Venkatesh Iyer, who produced a powerful unbeaten 73 off 40 balls, supported by Tim David’s late acceleration, helping RCB reach a commanding total.

Punjab Kings’ bowling effort saw Harpreet Brar emerge as the most successful bowler with figures of 2 for 35, but the attack struggled to contain the flow of runs, particularly during the middle and death overs. RCB’s aggressive intent ensured Punjab Kings were under pressure for most of the innings, setting up a steep chase.

In response, Punjab Kings suffered an early collapse, losing Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, and skipper Shreyas Iyer within the first 19 runs. Connolly, however, provided resistance with a brisk 37 off 22 balls, striking three sixes and three fours, briefly stabilising the innings alongside Suryansh Shedge, who added 35 off 22 deliveries.

Despite contributions from Marcus Stoinis (37 off 25) and Shashank Singh, who played a counter-attacking 56 off 27 balls, Punjab Kings were unable to recover fully and were restricted to 199 for 8. RCB’s bowling attack, led by Rasikh Salam Dar with 3 for 36 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with 2 for 38, ensured the target remained out of reach and secured a 23-run victory.

Individually, Connolly’s innings added to his remarkable debut season, in which he has emerged as Punjab Kings’ leading run-scorer with 473 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate above 160, including a century and multiple half-centuries. His tally of 32 sixes has now placed him ahead of Jayasuriya’s 31 sixes in the inaugural IPL season, marking a significant statistical highlight even as Punjab Kings continue to struggle in the points table.
