BCCI Introduces Mid-Season Rule Restricting Substitute Player Movement
BCCI restricts benched players' movement mid-IPL to curb coaching interference.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced a dramatic mid-season rule change for IPL 2026 on April 8, restricting the movement of benched and substitute players during matches to enhance discipline and streamline on-field operations. Under the updated Match Playing Conditions (clauses 11.5.2 and 24.1.4), only the 16 named players in the match squad can enter the field, including for tasks like carrying drinks or messages, while extras must remain confined to the dugout.
Previously, larger 25-player squads often saw substitutes roaming near boundaries, wearing bibs, which led to overcrowding and distractions. Now, a maximum of five non-playing squad members can move near the boundary line and LED boards; others face strict limits to prevent unnecessary activity. Team sources confirmed recent instructions: "Substitutes cannot move around during the match... only the 16 named can carry drinks."
The rule applies immediately to all 10 franchises, aiming to tighten control without specifying triggers like recent on-field clutter incidents. It builds on existing guidelines requiring bibs for non-fielders, curbing practices that blurred lines between playing and support roles during high-stakes T20 action.Franchises adapted swiftly, with no public pushback reported, though it alters team logistics—coaches now rely more on umpires for communications. Critics see it as overreach amid IPL's commercial spectacle, but BCCI prioritizes "cleaner" matches, potentially reducing time-wasting appeals or boundary disruptions.

As playoffs near, clearer field dynamics could sharpen focus, benefiting broadcasters and fans seeking uninterrupted play. The change tests IPL's balance between spectacle and structure, setting precedents for future T20 leagues amid growing global scrutiny on player welfare and game integrity.
