BCB President Seeks Government Input After ICC Rejects T20 World Cup Venue Change

BCB hopes for a miracle after ICC denies shift; players are eager, but safety concerns persist.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam expressed hope for a “miracle” after the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected the BCB’s request to move their T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India. The board was given a 24-hour deadline on Wednesday to decide whether to participate. If Bangladesh maintains its refusal to travel, they could be replaced by Scotland.

Aminul said he requested additional time to consult the Bangladesh government before responding. “They said it's a valid point and gave me 24 or 48 hours to get back to them. We know India is not secure for us. We remain in the stance that we want to play in Sri Lanka,” he said, adding that the final decision would rest with the government.

He emphasised that Bangladesh players are eager to participate, but the government must consider broader security concerns. “The Bangladesh players want to play the World Cup. The Bangladesh government wants Bangladesh to play the World Cup. But we don't think India is safe for our players,” Aminul said.

Earlier, the ICC had confirmed that the T20 World Cup matches would go ahead as scheduled in India, citing no credible threats to players, officials, or fans. The ICC Board stated that relocating matches could compromise the “sanctity of ICC events” and undermine the organisation’s neutrality as a global governing body.
