Axar Patel's Unbeaten Fifty Guides Delhi Capitals Past Punjab Kings in IPL Thriller

Delhi Capitals defeat Punjab Kings by three wickets, with Axar Patel's explosive 56 keeping playoff hopes alive.

Delhi Capitals kept their Indian Premier League 2026 playoff hopes alive with a dramatic three-wicket victory over Punjab Kings at the HPCA Stadium on Monday. Chasing a daunting target of 211, Delhi Capitals completed the chase in just 19 overs after recovering from a difficult position early in the innings. Captain Axar Patel led the fightback with a crucial half-century before the lower order held its nerve in a tense finish to seal one of the team’s most important wins of the season.

Delhi Capitals found themselves under pressure after slipping to 74 for 4 during the chase, with Punjab Kings appearing firmly in control. However, Axar Patel counterattacked with an aggressive 56 off 33 deliveries, while David Miller produced a quickfire 51 from just 28 balls. The pair stitched together a game-changing 64-run partnership that shifted the momentum back towards Delhi. Their aggressive approach against both pace and spin helped reduce the required run rate significantly and revived Delhi’s hopes after a shaky start.

Even after the dismissal of Axar and Miller, Delhi Capitals’ young lower-order batters ensured there was no late collapse. Ashutosh Sharma smashed a rapid 24 off only 10 balls, while Madhav Tiwari remained unbeaten on 18 from eight deliveries. Auqib Nabi added the finishing touches with an unbeaten 10 off just two balls as Delhi Capitals reached 216 for 7 with an over to spare. The successful chase of 211 marked one of the highest run chases of the IPL 2026 season and significantly strengthened Delhi’s chances of reaching the playoffs.

Earlier in the evening, Punjab Kings posted a formidable 210 for 5 after an explosive start from opener Priyansh Arya, who struck 56 off 33 balls. Prabhsimran Singh also contributed aggressively at the top before captain Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings with an unbeaten 59 from 36 deliveries. Suryansh Shedge provided a late flourish with a brisk cameo as Punjab appeared set for a commanding total. For Delhi, Mukesh Kumar and Madhav Tiwari delivered important breakthroughs during the middle overs to prevent Punjab from crossing an even bigger score.

After the match, Axar Patel praised his team’s resilience and highlighted the bowlers’ recovery after a difficult start in the powerplay. The Delhi captain said restricting Punjab after conceding heavily in the first few overs proved to be the turning point of the contest. Axar also applauded the contributions made by younger players, including Sahil Parakh, and expressed confidence in the future of the franchise. He stated that the calmness shown by the youngsters in pressure situations reflected the strength and depth of the current Delhi squad.

Madhav Tiwari, who was named Player of the Match for his all-round contribution, thanked the team management for backing him and giving him opportunities during the tournament. The youngster said he had worked extensively on improving both his bowling and batting, particularly his range-hitting ability. He also joked that he considered himself “100 percent bowler and 100 percent batter” when asked about his all-round skills. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings were left to reflect on another disappointing result, with dropped catches, fielding lapses, and inconsistent bowling contributing to their fourth consecutive defeat in the tournament.
