Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is reportedly set to be appointed as the head coach of Sydney Thunder ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, marking a significant coaching development in the franchise’s rebuilding phase. The Sydney-based franchise has been searching for a new head coach after parting ways with Trevor Bayliss, whose five-year tenure ended following a mixed run of results.

While Bayliss led the team to the BBL final in the 2024–25 season, Sydney Thunder also endured disappointing bottom-place finishes in the 2023–24 and 2025–26 campaigns, prompting the management to reassess its leadership structure.According to reports, Flintoff has emerged as the leading candidate for the role and is expected to be officially confirmed by the franchise in the coming days.

If finalised, the appointment would mark his first major overseas franchise coaching assignment, further expanding his transition from international cricketer to coaching professional.Flintoff has been actively involved in coaching over the past year, working with the England Lions setup and accompanying the side during their tour of Australia, which ran alongside the Ashes series.

He has also gained franchise coaching experience in The Hundred, where he spent two seasons with the Northern Superchargers between 2024 and 2025, guiding the team to fourth and third-place finishes respectively. As a player, Flintoff has prior experience in Australian domestic T20 cricket, having represented Brisbane Heat during the 2014–15 BBL season. That stint, which included seven appearances, ultimately became the final chapter of his professional playing career before retirement.

If the appointment is confirmed, Flintoff is expected to step into immediate strategic decisions at Sydney Thunder, including leadership discussions involving veteran opener David Warner. Warner’s position as captain has recently come under scrutiny following legal issues, with court proceedings scheduled for June 24, adding further uncertainty to the team’s leadership setup ahead of the new season.
