Zaheer Khan Highlights Tactical Challenges Ahead For Vaibhav Sooryavanshi In IPL Career
Zaheer Khan cautions young IPL star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi about evolving bowling strategies ahead.
Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has cautioned young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi about the evolving challenges he is likely to face as opposition teams begin to analyse and adapt to his aggressive style of play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Sooryavanshi, who impressed throughout IPL 2026 with a standout season, scored 776 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and an extraordinary strike rate of 237.31. The 15-year-old left-hander quickly emerged as one of the most talked-about talents in the tournament, earning attention for his fearless stroke play and ability to maintain a high scoring rate even under pressure.
His breakthrough campaign concluded with Rajasthan Royals’ exit after losing the Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans by seven wickets. In that match, Sooryavanshi once again showcased his ability to adapt to match situations, scoring a fluent 96 off 47 balls, which included eight fours and seven sixes, despite wickets falling regularly at the other end.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Zaheer Khan highlighted that while the youngster’s performances have been exceptional, bowlers will increasingly attempt to devise specific plans to restrict him. He noted that opposition teams have already begun experimenting with different field placements and tactical approaches to curb his scoring, including restricting his preferred hitting zones and forcing him into less comfortable shots.
Zaheer stressed that such adjustments are a natural progression in a young player’s career and that consistency at the highest level depends on adapting to these evolving challenges. He pointed out that maintaining success in modern T20 cricket requires flexibility, game awareness and the ability to respond to varied bowling strategies across different matches and conditions.
Despite the challenges, Zaheer praised Sooryavanshi’s versatility, noting his ability to adjust his innings according to match situations. He added that the batter’s strike rate and temperament, even in less fluent innings, reflect a rare level of maturity for his age. According to him, sustained success will depend on the youngster’s ability to continuously refine his game as teams study and counter his strengths in future seasons.
