Yuzvendra Chahal Says Sanju Samson Can’t Use Pressure as Excuse After T20I Failures

Yuzvendra Chahal says pressure shouldn't excuse Sanju Samson's repeated T20I failures ahead of 2026 World Cup.

Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has expressed concern over Sanju Samson’s recent batting struggles in the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand, saying the batter cannot blame pressure given his international experience. Samson, once again, failed to make a significant impact in the fourth T20I at Visakhapatnam, scoring 24 runs off 15 balls before being dismissed by Mitchell Santner.

Chahal highlighted Samson’s inconsistent form in recent matches, noting that the batter has scored only 40 runs in his last four innings of the series. His highest score in the last five T20I innings remains 37, made against South Africa in December 2025. With Ishan Kishan performing strongly at No. 3, Samson’s place in India’s T20 World Cup squad is under scrutiny.

Speaking on JioStar, Chahal said, “Sanju has played international cricket for over a decade. Pressure shouldn’t be an excuse for someone of his experience. Four chances in this series were enough to prove himself. While failure in one or two games is understandable, repeated underperformance cannot be ignored.”

Chahal also noted that Samson will likely blame himself for his poor outings, but emphasized there is no reason to panic with the T20 World Cup still some distance away. He added that team management will need to make tough decisions, potentially considering Ishan Kishan as an alternative opener and wicketkeeper.

The fourth T20I saw Ishan Kishan miss the game due to a minor niggle, leaving Samson to carry the middle-order responsibilities. The fifth and final T20I of the series is scheduled for January 31 in Thiruvananthapuram, which could be a crucial match for Samson to reclaim his position in the squad.

With the T20 World Cup 2026 approaching, team management faces a critical decision regarding India’s opening pair and middle-order stability. Samson’s performance in the remaining games of the New Zealand series may heavily influence his selection and role in the upcoming global tournament.
