Yuvraj Singh Shares Courageous Journey From Cancer Diagnosis to Cricket Comeback
Yuvraj Singh fought cancer, returned to cricket, inspiring millions.
Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has shared the harrowing details of his battle with cancer, revealing that he was once told he had only three to six months left to live. Known as one of India’s most impactful match-winners, Yuvraj’s career highlights include Player of the Series awards in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. His story of resilience has inspired generations of cricketers and fans alike.
Yuvraj’s health struggles began during the 2011 World Cup. Despite battling cancer, he continued to play, delivering some of the finest performances of his career. However, after the tournament, he realized the severity of his condition. “It was hard to accept. At the peak of your career, you’re on top of a mountain and then you fall into a ditch,” Yuvraj said in a conversation with Michael Vaughan on The Overlap Cricket. He recalled being advised by Dr. Nitesh Rohatgi that the tumour was located between his heart and lung and that chemotherapy was essential. Without treatment, he was given a life expectancy of just three to six months.
Determined to fight, Yuvraj moved to the United States for treatment under Dr. Einhorn, who had previously treated cyclist Lance Armstrong. The former all-rounder described the mental challenges of accepting that he might never play cricket again. “I needed something to motivate myself. If I don’t play cricket, who am I? I’m no one. That’s what I believed,” he said.

During his treatment, Yuvraj drew inspiration from cricket itself, watching videos to keep his motivation alive. Legendary cricketers Anil Kumble and Sachin Tendulkar visited him, offering guidance and support. Kumble encouraged him to focus on recovery rather than watching cricket, while Dr. Einhorn instilled confidence that Yuvraj could return to the sport and live cancer-free.
Remarkably, within six months, Yuvraj made a return to the Indian team during the T20 World Cup. Although he admitted he was not at his peak, he managed to earn a Man of the Match award. Following the tournament, he and teammate Zaheer Khan undertook two months of intensive fitness training in Brive, France, further preparing him for a successful comeback.
Yuvraj Singh’s story highlights both the physical and mental resilience required to overcome life-threatening illness. His journey from a dire cancer diagnosis to returning to international cricket remains one of the most inspiring narratives in the sport’s history.
