Yuvraj Singh: India Must Avoid Big Changes Ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has urged the national team management to maintain consistency in the ODI setup as India prepare for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. With the tournament scheduled for October next year, questions remain over the future participation of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have retired from the other formats of international cricket. Yuvraj, a key figure in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph, believes the team should avoid making major changes close to the tournament.

Speaking to Cricinfo, Yuvraj said India must identify a core group of 16 to 20 players and ensure that they receive sufficient opportunities before the World Cup. He pointed out that the number of 50-over matches has reduced because of the increasing focus on T20 cricket, making every available ODI important for preparation. According to him, players need regular game time to build understanding, confidence and match readiness well before the tournament begins.

Yuvraj stressed that the team should not wait until the final stages of preparation to make significant alterations to the squad. He said India should focus on developing the same group over the coming year rather than constantly changing combinations. The former all-rounder believes continuity will allow the players to understand their roles and help the team avoid uncertainty when the World Cup approaches.

He also recalled that India have struggled in major tournaments whenever they introduced substantial changes at the last moment. Yuvraj said the selectors and team management must back the squad they believe can win the 2027 World Cup, regardless of occasional failures during the preparation period. He added that trust in the players and maintaining belief in the chosen group would be essential to building a competitive side.

Yuvraj further pointed to India’s recent success in the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, saying the team had groomed a settled group for those tournaments. He also noted that India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final, highlighting the importance of continuity in white-ball cricket. In his view, the same approach should be followed for the next 50-over World Cup, with players being developed specifically for the conditions and demands of the competition.

Rather than focusing too far ahead on the final stages, Yuvraj advised India to first concentrate on securing a place in the semi-finals and then winning the two knockout matches required to lift the trophy. He said the immediate priority should be to build a united squad capable of responding to different match situations. With decisions surrounding senior players such as Rohit and Kohli still attracting attention, Yuvraj’s message underlines the importance of clarity, regular opportunities and stability in India’s World Cup planning.
