Yamal's Last-Gasp Penalty Denies Newcastle a Famous Champions League Win
Yamal's stoppage-time penalty earns Barcelona a crucial away draw.
Lamine Yamal scored a dramatic stoppage-time penalty to rescue FC Barcelona from defeat against Newcastle United F.C. in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg clash on Tuesday. The match ended 1–1 after Newcastle appeared set for a famous victory at St James' Park before the late equaliser changed the outcome.
Newcastle looked on course to secure a crucial first-leg advantage when Harvey Barnes broke the deadlock in the 86th minute. The winger found the back of the net after a sustained spell of pressure from the home side, igniting celebrations among supporters who sensed a historic European night. However, Barcelona were handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time when a foul inside the penalty area changed the course of the match.
The decisive moment came when Dani Olmo was brought down inside the box by Malick Thiaw. With the final kick of the game, Yamal stepped up to take the penalty and calmly converted, sending goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way. The late goal ensured Barcelona avoided defeat despite what many considered a below-par performance.

Newcastle had started the match with strong intensity despite a setback before kickoff, as Anthony Gordon was named on the bench due to illness. Manager Eddie Howe had described the fixture as one of the biggest in the club’s history, and his side showed determination early in the match. Danish forward William Osula was handed a starting role and troubled Barcelona’s defensive line with his pace.
Newcastle continued to push for a breakthrough throughout the game, creating several promising chances. A first-half opportunity saw Sandro Tonali force a save from Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia, with Pau Cubarsi clearing the ball off the line to prevent a goal. Barcelona struggled to create clear opportunities, with striker Robert Lewandowski missing one of their few chances before being substituted.
The draw leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the second leg scheduled for March 18 in Spain. While Newcastle will be disappointed after coming close to victory, the English club remains hopeful of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time. Barcelona, meanwhile, will take confidence from their late escape as they prepare to host the decisive return leg with the advantage of playing on home soil.
