Wasim Jaffer Questions Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar Selection for T20 World Cup 2026
Former opener Wasim Jaffer questions squad balance as India prepares to defend its T20 World Cup title.
Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has publicly questioned the inclusion of wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan and all-rounder Washington Sundar in India's 15-member squad for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, suggesting that Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jitesh Sharma would have been stronger alternatives. In a post on X dated December 21, 2025, Jaffer argued that Jaiswal's proven quality warranted his selection without explanation, while Jitesh had done little to deserve being dropped after featuring prominently in recent T20Is. He specifically highlighted that with Axar Patel as vice-captain and likely to play alongside spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav, Sundar's role in the playing XI appeared limited.
The squad, announced for both the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand and the World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka starting February 7, 2026, features Suryakumar Yadav as captain and includes Kishan's return after a strong domestic performance. Kishan, who last played for India in 2023, led Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title earlier in December 2025 with explosive batting, earning him a spot as a backup wicketkeeper capable of opening. Meanwhile, Sundar, who played only one match in India's recent series win over South Africa, adds depth to a spin-heavy attack that already includes Axar, Kuldeep, and Chakaravarthy.
Jaffer's critique underscores ongoing debates about team balance and form in Indian cricket selections. Jaiswal, a key member of the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning side, has been sidelined in T20Is due to the rise of Abhishek Sharma and Test commitments, while Jitesh played the full series against South Africa but was overlooked in favour of keepers who can bat higher up the order. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar emphasised flexible combinations, including two wicketkeeper-openers in Sanju Samson and Kishan, as a strategic priority.

As defending champions, India aims to become the first team to retain the T20 World Cup title on home soil. The squad also sees returns for Rinku Singh and the omission of Shubman Gill, reflecting a focus on dynamic middle-order options and bowling variety for conditions expected across venues in India and Sri Lanka. The tournament will feature 20 teams competing in 55 matches, culminating in the final on March 8, 2026.
