Viv Richards Backs Joe Root to Break Sachin Tendulkar's Test Record

West Indies great Viv Richards believes Joe Root has a genuine chance of breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs in Test cricket, while adding a cheeky remark about former England batter Geoffrey Boycott. Tendulkar finished his illustrious Test career with 15,921 runs from 200 matches over 24 years, a record that has stood since his retirement in 2013. Root, however, has steadily closed the gap and currently has 14,208 Test runs, leaving him 1,713 behind Tendulkar’s tally as he continues his pursuit of the long-standing record.

Richards, who has often spoken highly of Tendulkar, said there is no reason Root should not attempt to reach the landmark. Speaking on The Test Match Special, Richards pointed to Root’s position as England captain and his consistency as reasons for believing the milestone is within his reach. He also suggested that Root breaking the record would carry particular significance in English cricket, where Boycott has long been regarded as one of Yorkshire’s greatest batters. Richards jokingly said a successful chase would send a message that Root had become the best batter to emerge from Yorkshire.

The former West Indies captain's comments added a light-hearted element to an otherwise serious discussion about Root's pursuit of Tendulkar's record. Richards said that if Root is in a position to continue playing and scoring runs, there is nothing wrong with trying to achieve such a significant milestone. Root has already established himself among England's most prolific Test batters and has maintained a high level of consistency over a long international career. His continued run-scoring has consequently made Tendulkar's once seemingly unreachable record a realistic target.

Root's path towards the record, however, has recently encountered an unusual obstacle in the form of LBW dismissals. The England batter has been dismissed leg before wicket 10 times in his last 13 innings, a notable increase given his otherwise consistent record. With 1,713 runs still separating Root from Tendulkar, every innings will become increasingly important if he is to maintain the pace required to overtake the former India batter.

Despite the recent pattern, Root does not appear overly concerned about his LBW dismissals. The experienced batter said he has played international cricket for a long time and has repeatedly found ways to identify and solve technical problems in his game. His comments indicate that he views the recent dismissals as an issue that can be addressed rather than something likely to derail his long-term pursuit. Root's ability to adapt and continue scoring consistently will be crucial as he attempts to close the remaining gap to Tendulkar.

At 35, Root remains within reach of the record, although overtaking Tendulkar will depend on how long he continues playing, his fitness and his ability to maintain his scoring rate. His strong record in home conditions has strengthened the belief that he could eventually reach the landmark. Richards' backing adds further weight to the debate, while the Yorkshire comparison with Boycott provides an entertaining subplot to Root's pursuit. For now, Tendulkar remains the leading Test run-scorer, but Root's continued presence near the top means the record chase is becoming one of the most closely watched individual milestones in modern Test cricket.
