Virat Kohli’s Recovery Progressing Rapidly, Eyes Return in England ODI Series

Virat Kohli recovering well and expected to return for England ODIs.

Star Indian batter Virat Kohli is reportedly recovering faster than expected from a hamstring injury sustained during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) final and is on track to return for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, beginning July 14. According to a report, Kohli has already begun rehabilitation and is expected to join the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence for further assessment and clearance in the coming days.

The ODI series against England is scheduled to follow a five-match T20I series, with matches set to be played in Birmingham, Cardiff and London (Lord’s) on July 14, 16 and 19 respectively. If Kohli regains full match fitness in time, he is likely to be available for selection for all three ODIs, strengthening India’s batting lineup ahead of a key international assignment.

Sources quoted by the Times of India indicated that Kohli’s recovery trajectory has been encouraging. A BCCI insider reportedly said that the injury appears to be healing quickly and that the batter is expected to undergo a formal fitness evaluation before receiving final clearance. The selection committee is expected to meet within the next three to four days to finalise India’s ODI squad for the England tour, making Kohli’s fitness status a key point of consideration.

Kohli sustained the hamstring injury during the IPL final on May 31, a rare setback for the veteran batter who has built a reputation for exceptional fitness and durability throughout his career. At 37, the incident has sparked discussions about workload management, although there is confidence within cricketing circles that he will return to full form given his disciplined recovery approach and physical conditioning.

Despite retiring from T20 Internationals and Test cricket formats, Kohli remains a central figure in India’s ODI plans, particularly with the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa on the horizon. Team management continues to view him as a key pillar of the batting unit, both for his consistency and his experience in high-pressure matches.

If his rehabilitation continues without setbacks, Kohli’s return for the England ODIs would mark an important boost for India as they prepare for a challenging overseas series. His availability would not only strengthen the top order but also provide leadership and stability in a squad undergoing gradual transition in the lead-up to future global tournaments.
