Vaibhav Suryavanshi Stars With 72 As India Post Competitive 238 Against Bangladesh

14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi's 72 and Abhigyan Kundu's 80 help India recover from an early collapse to set a 239-run target in a 49-over rain-hit match.

India Under-19 posted a competitive total of 238 runs against Bangladesh Under-19 in a rain-affected ICC U19 World Cup 2026 match on Saturday, riding on impressive half-centuries from 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi and wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu. The contest, reduced to 49 overs per side due to intermittent rain, saw India recover from an early collapse to put up a challenging score at the Queens Sports Club.

India endured a disastrous start after being put under pressure in the powerplay, losing captain Ayush Mhatre, Vedant Trivedi and Vihaan Malhotra cheaply. The early setbacks left the Indian batting line-up reeling, with Bangladesh bowlers maintaining tight lines and extracting movement under overcast conditions, raising concerns over India’s ability to post a defendable total.

The innings was steadied by Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who once again underlined his growing reputation with a mature knock of 72 runs off 67 balls. The teenager showcased composure beyond his age, mixing solid defence with controlled aggression to anchor the innings during the middle overs and halt Bangladesh’s momentum.

Suryavanshi’s innings carried historic significance, as he broke Virat Kohli’s long-standing record for the most runs by an Indian in youth ODIs. He also became the youngest player in U19 World Cup history to score a half-century, further cementing his status as one of India’s most exciting young prospects.

At the other end, Abhigyan Kundu played a crucial supporting role and later took charge of the innings. The wicketkeeper-batter struck a well-paced half-century, ensuring India accelerated in the final phase despite losing wickets at regular intervals. His partnership with the lower order helped India cross the 230-run mark.

The match also drew attention before the first ball was bowled, as the captains of both sides did not shake hands at the toss, reportedly reflecting ongoing political tensions between India and Bangladesh. With 238 on the board, India will look to their bowlers to defend the total and maintain momentum in the U19 World Cup campaign.
