Uddhav Thackeray Calls India-Pakistan Asia Cup Match Insult To Nation
Shiv Sena UBT chief urges boycott, citing soldiers’ sacrifices on the border.
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray strongly criticized the upcoming India-Pakistan Asia Cup cricket match, calling it an insult to national sentiments amid ongoing border tensions and sacrifices by Indian soldiers. Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Thackeray announced statewide protests in Maharashtra to oppose the match scheduled for Sunday, urging a boycott to signal India’s stance against terrorism.
Thackeray argued that playing cricket with Pakistan undermines the sacrifices of Indian soldiers, questioning the appropriateness of such events given ongoing security concerns. He accused the BJP-led central government of trivializing patriotism by allowing the match to proceed. The Asia Cup, organized by the Asian Cricket Council, has reignited debates over cricketing ties with Pakistan, a sensitive issue due to historical and political tensions.
Recalling a past interaction, Thackeray referenced his father, Bal Thackeray, who had told Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad at their Mumbai residence, Matoshree, that cricket with Pakistan should not occur while terror activities persist. The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader’s remarks echo long-standing sentiments within the party against India-Pakistan sports engagements.
