Temba Bavuma on Guwahati Pitch: “Typical Subcontinental Wicket with Batting First Two Days”

South Africa captain previews Guwahati pitch ahead of second Test vs India.

South Africa Captain Temba Bavuma has previewed the surface for the second Test against India at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, which is hosting its first-ever Test match. Bavuma described the pitch as a “typical subcontinental wicket,” where the first two days are expected to assist batting before spinners come into play later in the match. He also noted that the Guwahati track looked fresher and more consistent than the Sydney Eden Gardens pitch used in the first Test, which had uneven bounce and early turn that challenged batsmen.

Bavuma mentioned that the South African squad will reassess the pitch in the morning before finalizing the replacement for injured pacer Kagiso Rabada, who has been ruled out of the Test due to a rib strain. The captain expressed confidence that the conditions would allow for a balanced contest between bat and ball, with the first innings being crucial to set the tone.

Reflecting on his team’s morale, Bavuma stated that the players are buoyant after their victory in Kolkata and are eager to replicate their performance to secure a historic series win in India after 25 years. He expressed excitement over playing at a new venue, highlighting its fresh conditions and the challenge it presents to both teams.

Regarding the toss, Bavuma felt it would not be as decisive as in the first Test but acknowledged the advantage of batting on the first two days remains significant. He reiterated that whether batting or bowling first, South Africa aims to play proactively and capitalize on opportunities, emphasizing a mindset focused on winning rather than merely defending a lead.

With Guwahati hosting Test cricket for the first time and India preparing for leadership changes after Shubman Gill’s injury, both sides face new challenges. Bavuma’s insights underline the anticipated strategic depth and competitive spirit expected in what promises to be an enthralling second Test clash at the Barsapara Stadium.
