“Team Needed Me”: Ajinkya Rahane Speaks Out After Australia Test Snub, Questions Age-Based Selection

Ajinkya Rahane says India needed his experience in Australia, questioning age-based selection and stressing red-ball intent.

Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has voiced his disappointment at being overlooked for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, insisting that age should not factor into national selection for players still performing in domestic cricket. Speaking on Sunday after scoring a resilient 159 off 303 balls for Mumbai against Chhattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy, the 37-year-old emphasised his readiness and value to the team, particularly in challenging overseas conditions. Rahane, whose last Test appearance was against the West Indies in 2023, argued that experience remains crucial in red-ball cricket and that he believed the Indian side needed his presence Down Under.

Rahane pointed to his consistent domestic performances over the past four to five seasons, including a strong showing in the IPL and his recall for the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia. He cited former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey, who debuted in his late 30s and excelled, to reinforce his view that “age is just a number” when intent, passion, and hard work are evident. Highlighting recent centuries by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Rahane stressed that a balance of youth and experience is essential, especially in Test cricket abroad, and criticised the notion that players over 34 or 35 are past their prime.

The Mumbai cricketer also expressed frustration over the lack of communication from selectors following his omission, noting that experienced players deserve more opportunities upon comeback. He acknowledged fulfilling the selection committee’s directive to prioritise domestic cricket when available but maintained focus on controllables amid external criticism from “unwanted people”. Rahane, who recently stepped down as Mumbai’s red-ball captain in favour of Shardul Thakur, advised dropped teammate Sarfaraz Khan to stay disciplined and keep scoring runs without distraction.

Despite India’s 1-3 series defeat in Australia, Rahane remains committed to domestic cricket and open to future national call-ups, leaving the decision to selectors. His remarks underscore ongoing debates about experience versus youth in Indian cricket, particularly after a challenging tour where seasoned leadership could have made a difference. As Mumbai continues its Ranji campaign, Rahane’s form serves as a reminder of his enduring capability at the first-class level.
