T20 World Cup Hero Sanju Samson Emphasizes Team Over Individual Milestones
Sanju Samson says he stays true to himself while prioritizing team success in T20 World Cup.
India’s T20 World Cup 2026 hero, wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, has opened up about his approach to cricket, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself while contributing to the team’s success. Speaking to reporters following India’s title-winning campaign, Samson highlighted that the current Indian side consciously prioritizes collective achievement over individual milestones, a philosophy reinforced consistently by the team’s captain and coaching staff.
“That’s the way everyone is thinking now. The constant message from our leaders is that the team should come first and individual milestones should come second,” Samson said. He added that this mindset has been instilled across the squad, shaping how players respond under pressure during matches.
Samson, who hails from Kerala, reflected on his longstanding belief in viewing cricket as a team sport. “From my Under-13 days playing for Kerala till this moment, I have always believed in playing to win. For that victory, whatever you do should help the team first,” he said. He also acknowledged the responsibility of representing his home state at the highest level, inspiring young cricketers to dream bigger.

The wicketkeeper-batsman recounted his memorable 97-run innings against West Indies, describing it as crucial for India’s campaign. “While chasing, I tried to build a partnership from one end. Wickets kept falling and the pressure kept building, but we managed it properly and got the winning shot in the end,” he said. He also expressed gratitude for messages of encouragement, including one from Sachin Tendulkar, which he described as “very emotional.”
Looking ahead, Samson said he is focused on performing in the upcoming Indian Premier League season, where he will share a dressing room with former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings. Facing his former IPL team, Rajasthan Royals, will also be a first for him, but he remains committed to prioritizing the match situation over personal emotions.
Kerala state authorities honored Samson for his World Cup heroics. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the Kerala Cricket Association’s new cricket ground at Mangalapuram, praising Samson as a symbol of Kerala’s cricketing talent. Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar also presented him with a shawl, a kasavu mundu, an idol of Lord Padmanabhaswamy, and the autobiography of Sachin Tendulkar, Playing It My Way.
