Sydney Thunder to Provide Ashwin Private Security Amid Massive Fan Attention

Ravichandran Ashwin's high-profile entry into the Big Bash League (BBL) with Sydney Thunder has prompted the franchise to arrange private security for the Indian spin maestro, anticipating a surge in interest from the local Indian diaspora during training sessions at the Sydney Olympic Park. The 39-year-old off-spinner, renowned for his 533 Test wickets and tactical genius, will feature in three to five matches starting January 2026, plus playoffs if qualified, marking his maiden foray into Australia's T20 circuit.

Media reports highlight the move as a proactive measure to avert potential safety risks, drawing parallels to last year's chaotic scene when 5,000 Indian fans mobbed a pink-ball practice at Adelaide Oval during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland confirmed the enhanced protocols, stating, "We're going to have to ramp up security." The open layout of Cricket New South Wales facilities at Olympic Park poses challenges, with officials consulting Cricket Australia on safeguards for athletes of Ashwin's stature. "The prospect of the veteran spinner training and playing in western Sydney has been flagged as a potential safety risk," the Sydney Morning Herald reported, noting that unchecked crowds could overwhelm sessions.

This comes as Thunder prepares for another marquee signing, Pakistan's Babar Azam with rivals Sydney Sixers, which Copeland described as "incredible for the tournament", underscoring the BBL's growing global allure amid a 15% viewership uptick in 2024-25 per Cricket Australia data.

In addition to security, Ashwin will document his BBL journey via a private crew filming content for his YouTube channel, which boasts 1.75 million subscribers, and share snippets on Instagram to his 5.3 million followers. Copeland hailed the acquisition as "the biggest signing in the history of the BBL", emphasising Ashwin's choice over bids from all eight clubs as a "cool story" that signals the league's competitiveness.

The veteran, who retired from Test cricket in December 2024 after a storied career spanning 18 years, brings tactical depth and fan magnetism to a franchise that reached the 2023-24 playoffs but seeks its first title since its inception in 2011.
