Suryakumar Yadav Stresses Focus Amid Indo-Pak Asia Cup Hype

India skipper urges players to filter distractions and concentrate on performance against Pakistan.

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav emphasised tuning out distractions as his team prepares for a high-stakes Asia Cup Super 4 clash against Pakistan on Sunday at Dubai International Stadium. Following a seven-wicket victory over Pakistan last week, where Suryakumar’s unbeaten 47 sealed the chase with a six, India aims to maintain dominance. The decision to forgo handshakes with Pakistan, a gesture of solidarity with the Pahalgam attack victims, sparked controversy, adding intensity to this rematch. Suryakumar advised his team to focus on the game, saying, “Close your room, switch off your phone, and sleep,” acknowledging the challenge of ignoring external pressures.

India’s spin trio—Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakravarthy—will be pivotal on Dubai’s spin-friendly pitches. Kuldeep leads with eight wickets in the tournament, while Axar’s fitness is under scrutiny after a head injury against Oman. Jasprit Bumrah’s return bolsters India’s bowling, with Suryakumar dismissing the toss’s impact in humid conditions, stating, “Whoever plays well will win.” India’s batting, led by Suryakumar, Shubman Gill, and Abhishek Sharma, remains formidable, though Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube seek more time at the crease.

Pakistan’s batting struggles, particularly against spin, have been evident. Opener Saim Ayub’s back-to-back ducks and reliance on Fakhar Zaman and Shaheen Shah Afridi highlight their challenges. Pakistan may opt for fast bowler Haris Rauf over spinner Sufiyan Muqeem after his recent performance. The team’s lack of batting depth contrasts with their unpredictable legacy, making them underdogs in this “grudge match” for their supporters.

Suryakumar downplayed the rivalry, focusing on entertaining a packed stadium. “When the stadium is full, it’s time for entertainment,” he said, advocating for a vibrant brand of cricket. With India’s preparation solid after three games and Pakistan seeking redemption, the match promises high drama. The game starts at 8 PM IST, with India favoured to continue their edge.
