Suresh Raina Urges KKR To Make Rinku Singh Captain After UPT20 League Title Win
Suresh Raina backs Rinku Singh for KKR captaincy after UPT20 title.
Former India batter Suresh Raina has urged Kolkata Knight Riders to consider Rinku Singh as their next captain ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Raina made the suggestion after Rinku guided Meerut Mavericks to the UPT20 League title. Meerut defeated Lucknow Falcons by 94 runs in the final at Ekana Stadium, completing an impressive campaign under Rinku's leadership. Raina believes KKR should invest in the left-handed batter and give him an opportunity to develop as a long-term leader.
Raina pointed out that KKR currently face a leadership decision following Ajinkya Rahane's retirement from international and IPL cricket. Rinku served as Rahane's deputy during the 2026 IPL season, giving him some experience within the franchise's leadership group. KKR have also been linked with a possible move for Hardik Pandya, although there has been no confirmed development regarding the reported trade. Raina believes the franchise already has a potential captain within its existing setup and should consider giving Rinku a sustained opportunity.
Rinku's leadership credentials received a major boost during the 2026 UPT20 League. He captained Meerut Mavericks in 10 matches and guided the team to nine victories before leading them to the championship. Although he contributed only briefly with the bat in the final, Meerut produced a dominant performance after posting 203/7 in 20 overs. Opener Divyansh Joshi provided the main batting fireworks, scoring 105 from 40 deliveries and giving Meerut a strong platform.

Lucknow Falcons struggled to respond during their chase of 204 and were dismissed for 109 in 16 overs. The 94-run victory secured the title for Meerut and highlighted the team's consistency throughout the competition. Rinku's ability to guide the side through the tournament and deliver results has strengthened the argument that he could take on a larger leadership role at the IPL level. His successful campaign also comes at a time when his future responsibilities with KKR are attracting increased attention.
Rinku has been associated with KKR since the 2018 IPL season, making the franchise his only IPL team. He has played 73 matches and scored 1,394 runs in the tournament. During the 2026 season, he was KKR's leading run-scorer, further strengthening his importance to the franchise. His reputation was firmly established during the 2023 IPL season when he struck five consecutive sixes against Yash Dayal in the final five deliveries of a match against Gujarat Titans, producing one of the competition's most memorable finishes.
Raina's recommendation places Rinku among the potential candidates for KKR's next captaincy, although the final decision will rest with the franchise management. His recent leadership success with Meerut, long association with KKR and established record as a dependable middle-order batter make him a natural option for consideration. Whether KKR choose to promote Rinku or pursue a more experienced captain remains to be seen, but Raina's message is clear: the franchise should invest in Rinku and give him the opportunity to prove himself as a leader.
