Sunil Gavaskar Defends BCCI Against Pakistan's Bullying Allegations Ahead of T20 WC
Gavaskar rejects bullying claims, saying India always initiates cricket ties.
As the T20 World Cup 2026 begins in Colombo, controversy has erupted ahead of the much-anticipated India vs. Pakistan clash. The Pakistan government has barred its cricket team from playing India on February 15. Pakistan has accused India of bullying them using influence within the ICC. This decision has shifted attention from cricket to political allegations. The drama has overshadowed the early excitement of the tournament.
Former Pakistan Cricket Board chief Najam Sethi supported the government’s decision. He claimed the BCCI has been bullying Pakistan for years. According to him, the boycott is a chance to respond firmly. His comments quickly sparked reactions across the cricketing world. The allegations intensified tensions between the two rival nations.
Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar strongly dismissed the bullying claims. He said India has repeatedly tried to improve cricketing ties with Pakistan. Gavaskar highlighted how India invited Pakistani players and commentators in the past. He stressed that India has never blocked Pakistan unfairly. Calling the accusations baseless, he said India simply minds its own business.

Gavaskar also recalled earlier times when bilateral series were played regularly. Pakistani cricketers featured in the IPL, and relations were more cooperative. He pointed out that India usually made the first move toward reconciliation. According to him, all tournament decisions are announced well in advance. He said nothing has been done secretly or forcefully.
Responding directly to Najam Sethi, Gavaskar asked for clear examples of bullying. He said using the term “bullying” is an easy way to avoid responsibility. If Pakistan truly feels pressured, he added, it should stand up strongly. Gavaskar insisted cricket should not be dragged into political narratives. He urged everyone to refocus on the spirit of the game.
