Stand-in Skipper Mandhana Leads India Women to Clinical 38-Run Win Over England

Stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana guided India Women to a commanding 38-run victory over England Women in the opening T20 International of the series at the County Ground in Chelmsford on Thursday. India produced an all-round performance to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series ahead of the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup preparations.
After being invited to bat first, India recovered strongly from an early setback to post an imposing 188 for seven in 20 overs. Opener Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues steadied the innings with a crucial 126-run partnership after India lost both Shafali Verma and Mandhana in the opening over. Rodrigues played an aggressive knock of 69 off 40 balls, while Bhatia marked her return with a composed 54 that laid the platform for the visitors’ strong total.
England’s bowlers struggled to contain India’s middle-order counterattack despite Lauren Bell picking up three wickets. Issy Wong and Dani Gibson proved expensive during the middle overs as Rodrigues accelerated the scoring rate with a flurry of boundaries. India maintained momentum throughout the innings and finished with a total that immediately put pressure on the hosts during the chase.
Chasing 189, England began positively but lost momentum as wickets fell at regular intervals. Amy Jones fought hard with a spirited 67 off 48 deliveries, but she received little sustained support from the rest of the batting lineup. India’s bowlers maintained disciplined lines and tightened the contest in the middle overs to prevent England from building meaningful partnerships.
Debutant pacer Nandani Sharma emerged as one of the standout performers for India, claiming three wickets in a memorable first international appearance. Deepti Sharma also played a key role with controlled bowling as England’s chase gradually unraveled under mounting scoreboard pressure. Mandhana later praised the team’s fielding effort and composure under pressure, while England stand-in skipper Charlie Dean admitted the hosts failed to regain control after India’s dominant middle-overs surge.
The victory provides India with an early advantage in the series and a significant confidence boost ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in England and Wales later this year. Both teams are using the series as an important testing ground, particularly with several senior players either returning from injury or being rested as managements finalize combinations before the global tournament.
