Srikkanth Fumes at Gambhir & Iyer After Sooryavanshi Selection Snub

Former India cricketer and BCCI chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth has criticised the Indian team management's decision to leave 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi out of the playing XI for the first T20I against Afghanistan. Sooryavanshi had been dropped in favour of Sanju Samson despite being named Player of the Series in India's previous T20I assignment against Zimbabwe. The decision has triggered debate over the team's handling of both the young opener and the experienced wicketkeeper-batter. Sooryavanshi had impressed during India's T20I series against Zimbabwe and emerged as the standout performer of the assignment.

His performances had strengthened his position in the squad and raised expectations that he would retain his place in the playing XI for the Afghanistan series. However, the team management opted to bring Samson into the XI for the opening match, leaving Sooryavanshi on the sidelines. The decision did not produce the desired result for India, with Samson scoring only 10 runs in the match. Srikkanth subsequently made his displeasure clear over the manner in which the team management handled the selection. He questioned the decision to leave Sooryavanshi out after the youngster's strong performances and suggested that the treatment of Samson has also been inconsistent.

The former India selector expressed particular concern about the message being sent to a player as young as Sooryavanshi. Having been recognised as the Player of the Series in India's previous T20 assignment, the 15-year-old could reasonably have expected to continue in the side, according to the broader argument made by Srikkanth. Dropping him immediately afterwards, he suggested, could affect the youngster's confidence at an important stage of his early international career. Srikkanth also sympathised with Samson, whose place in India's T20I setup has been the subject of repeated discussion. The wicketkeeper-batter has frequently faced competition for a place in the playing XI despite producing strong performances on several occasions.

His inclusion against Afghanistan was seen as another opportunity to make an impact, but his dismissal for 10 runs meant that the selection decision immediately came under scrutiny. The former cricketer recalled the strong reaction the selection decision generated and used a personal reference while describing his own displeasure.  Srikkanth's criticism was aimed at the team management led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer, with the former selector questioning the reasoning behind the changes to the batting combination. The debate also highlights the selection challenges facing India as it manages a mix of established players and emerging talent in T20 cricket.

Sooryavanshi's emergence has added another option at the top of the order, while Samson remains an experienced player seeking a consistent run in the side. Balancing opportunities for both players could become an important consideration for the management as the series progresses. For Sooryavanshi, the decision to sit out after his Player of the Series performance against Zimbabwe represents an early test of his ability to handle changes in selection. For Samson, the 10-run dismissal means he will have to wait for another opportunity to demonstrate his value. Srikkanth's criticism has brought renewed attention to both cases and placed the spotlight on Gambhir and the team management's selection strategy ahead of India's next T20I.
