South Africa Warned About Jasprit Bumrah Threat Ahead Of 1st Test Against India

Graeme Smith warns South Africa to prepare for Bumrah’s pace ahead of India Test series.

Former South African captain Graeme Smith has issued a strong warning to his national side ahead of their two-Test series against India, set to begin in Kolkata on Friday. Smith said South Africa must carefully manage India’s pace attack—especially Jasprit Bumrah—before contending with the spin challenge expected on subcontinent pitches. Calling Bumrah’s early bursts “game-defining,” Smith said the Proteas could not afford early collapses if they hoped to compete.

“When you play cricket in the subcontinent, spin becomes the primary conversation, but facing quality pacers like Bumrah early on will be crucial,” Smith told reporters at a media briefing. “Getting off to a solid start will be key. There’s nothing worse than being two or three wickets down before spin even comes into play. Countering Bumrah up front is going to be a big thing,” he said, adding that South Africa’s frontline bowlers, led by Kagiso Rabada, would also need to deliver with the new ball.

Smith described Rabada as the spiritual leader of the bowling unit, emphasizing his role in setting the tone early. “This is a big challenge for KG coming to the subcontinent. He’s definitely the leader of the attack and how he can set the tone with the new ball will be very important for Temba Bavuma and the team,” he noted. Smith added that South Africa’s batters must quickly adapt to local conditions, particularly against India’s spin duo expected to take control in later sessions.

The former skipper said he expects a competitive contest on a pitch likely to assist both batters and spinners. “The first Test in Kolkata generally offers good batting conditions with value for runs. But if the stadium is full, it will motivate the South Africans to do well,” he said. Smith also highlighted the importance of reverse swing, remarking that South Africa’s success could hinge on how Rabada and the pace unit exploit deteriorating conditions.

Smith’s former teammate Faf du Plessis echoed his sentiments, stressing that a strong start would determine South Africa’s success. “Your best chance of winning here is when you start well, especially as a batting unit. If you fall behind in the first game, spin and pressure start to dominate, and it becomes tough to recover,” Du Plessis said. He added that the team’s confidence is high after improved performances in spin-friendly conditions over the past year, including in Pakistan. The duo agreed that South Africa’s spin attack, spearheaded by Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer, could play an equally decisive role in the upcoming series.
