Sophie Ecclestone's Shocking Run-Out Miss Against India Leaves Cricket Fans Speechless

Ecclestone missed a simple run-out, gifting India overthrow runs off the final ball.

England spinner Sophie Ecclestone found herself at the centre of an unexpected social media storm after committing a rare fielding error during the third Women’s T20 International against India. The incident occurred on the final ball of India’s innings and quickly went viral, with cricket fans expressing disbelief at what appeared to be a straightforward missed run-out opportunity.

Bowling to Indian wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, Ecclestone delivered an accurate yorker that left the batter scrambling for a quick single. With Ghosh well short of her crease and seemingly resigned to being run out, Ecclestone had a simple chance to complete the dismissal. However, her underarm throw from close range missed the stumps entirely, allowing the Indian batter to survive.

The error became even more costly when the overthrow enabled India to collect an additional run. What should have ended as a routine run-out instead resulted in two runs being added to India’s total. Television cameras captured Ecclestone smiling in disbelief at the unusual sequence of events, while teammates also appeared stunned by the missed opportunity.

The incident quickly gained traction online, with several fans and commentators sharing clips of the moment across social media platforms. Some users described the fielding lapse as a “school cricket” mistake, while others viewed it as an unfortunate but humorous error that can occur even at the highest level of international sport. The clip soon became one of the most-discussed moments from the match.

Despite the fielding blunder, attention has also shifted to India’s preparations for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup. Following the series, India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana acknowledged that she and opening partner Shafali Verma needed to make greater contributions at the top of the order. India won the opening match of the series but lost the next two games, allowing England to secure a 2-1 series victory.

Mandhana said the England tour provided valuable experience ahead of the T20 World Cup, which will also be played in English conditions. While admitting that the opening pair had not produced the scores they expected, she expressed confidence that both batters would continue working on their game and return stronger as India intensifies preparations for the global tournament later this year.
