Sooryavanshi's Red-Ball Audition Ends in Just Six Balls For 8 Runs
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi dismissed for 8 in Duleep Trophy red-ball test.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's much-anticipated red-ball audition ended quickly as the East Zone vice-captain was dismissed for eight runs from six balls against North East Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2026 quarter-final. Playing at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, the young batter began positively by striking two consecutive boundaries before losing his wicket on the very next delivery.
Sooryavanshi opened the innings alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran after East Zone were asked to bat first. He faced right-arm medium pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam in the second over and immediately showed his attacking intent. The left-hander tucked the first boundary through mid-wicket before punching the following delivery through cover for another four, briefly raising hopes of a substantial contribution in his first major red-ball assignment.
Konthoujam, however, quickly adjusted his line and length. His next delivery was on a good length just outside off stump and cramped Sooryavanshi for room. Attempting to play the ball on the up towards point, the teenager found the fielder stationed at gully. His innings ended after only six deliveries, leaving him with eight runs and highlighting the technical and tactical challenges involved in moving from white-ball cricket to the longer format.

The dismissal came amid considerable attention surrounding Sooryavanshi's transition to first-class cricket. His appointment as East Zone vice-captain had added to expectations, while the quarter-final presented him with an opportunity to test himself against experienced red-ball players. North East Zone also appeared to have prepared specifically for the teenager, making the early dismissal an important learning experience as he continues adapting his approach to the demands of first-class cricket.
Sooryavanshi's childhood coach Manish Ojha had previously stressed that the biggest challenge would be mental rather than simply technical. According to Ojha, the youngster needs to understand that the aggressive approach that works in white-ball cricket cannot always be carried into the opening stages of a red-ball innings. Patience, shot selection, risk management and the ability to construct long innings will be crucial as he develops his game in the longer format.
Despite the disappointing first-innings outing, Sooryavanshi still has an opportunity to make an impact later in the match. A strong performance in East Zone's second innings could help him recover from the early setback and provide valuable experience against first-class opposition. For the teenager, the Duleep Trophy remains an important platform to demonstrate that his attacking skills can eventually be combined with the patience and discipline required for successful red-ball cricket.
