Shubman Gill surpasses Sachin Tendulkar in Virat Kohli-led elite T20 list.

Shubman Gill continued his remarkable IPL 2026 campaign by achieving multiple milestones during Gujarat Titans’ clash against Chennai Super Kings on Thursday. The Gujarat captain scored a rapid 64 off 37 balls as his side pushed for a top-two finish in the league stage after already securing qualification for the playoffs. During the innings, Gill surpassed Sachin Tendulkar on the list of Indian batters with the most runs as captain in T20 cricket.

Gill’s tally as captain rose to 1,934 runs, moving him ahead of Tendulkar’s 1,871 runs scored while leading Mumbai Indians between 2008 and 2011. He also overtook Ajinkya Rahane and climbed to eighth position on the overall list led by Virat Kohli, who remains far ahead with 6,564 runs as a T20 captain.Gill also crossed the landmark of 6,000 runs in T20 cricket during the knock.

He reached the milestone in his 185th innings, becoming the second-fastest Indian batter to achieve the feat behind KL Rahul, who took 166 innings. Overall, Gill now ranks among the fastest players globally to reach the milestone, with Chris Gayle still holding the record after getting there in 162 innings. The Gujarat skipper also joined an elite international list by becoming only the fourth player in men’s T20 cricket to score more than 6,000 runs before turning 27 years old.

The others to achieve the feat are Babar Azam, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Will Jacks. Gill now has over 6,000 T20 runs to his name, including six centuries and 38 half-centuries, with a highest score of 129. Gill has been one of the standout performers of IPL 2026, scoring 616 runs in 13 innings at an average of 47.38 and a strike rate above 161. He has already registered six fifties this season and remains among the leading contenders for the Orange Cap as Gujarat Titans continue their strong run in the tournament.

The innings also marked another milestone in Gill’s captaincy career, as he recorded yet another 500-plus run season in the IPL. He joined an exclusive group of captains featuring Tendulkar, Kohli and David Warner who have achieved multiple 500-run seasons while leading their franchises. Gill’s leadership record has also remained impressive, with the opener maintaining one of the highest win percentages among IPL captains with more than 30 matches in charge.
