Shubman Gill Set to Lead India’s ODI Team, Claims Aakash Chopra!

Former cricketer Aakash Chopra predicts Shubman Gill as India’s next ODI captain amidst Shreyas Iyer rumours.

The debate over India’s next ODI captain has intensified, with former batter Aakash Chopra asserting that Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to succeed Rohit Sharma. In a recent YouTube video, Chopra dismissed rumours suggesting Shreyas Iyer would take the helm, stating, “The next ODI captain has been decided without a formal appointment. It would be Shubman Gill.”

Gill, aged 25, has already been named India’s Test captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format and played a pivotal role in the team’s 2-2 draw in England in 2025. As the current ODI vice-captain during India’s Champions Trophy victory earlier this year and T20I vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup, Gill’s leadership credentials are well-established.

Chopra acknowledged Shreyas Iyer’s impressive captaincy record, noting his success in leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL final and guiding Punjab Kings to the final. However, he emphasized Gill’s achievements, including taking Gujarat Titans to the IPL playoffs in his second year as captain and his ability to lead by example. “Shreyas Iyer is a phenomenal skipper, but Shubman Gill is not bad either,” Chopra remarked, praising both players but leaning towards Gill for the ODI role.

Social media sentiments reflect divided opinions, with some advocating for Iyer’s proven leadership, while others back Gill’s rising stature.
