Shubman Gill Highlights Injury Concerns Ahead Of World Cup Preparation
Gill highlights fitness challenges as India prepares for World Cup.
India ODI captain Shubman Gill has raised concerns over the team’s recurring injury issues, particularly within the bowling unit, warning that players need to improve their fitness levels ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. His comments came after India suffered a 2-1 series defeat against England, losing the third and final ODI by 27 runs.
India entered the series without several key players due to fitness problems, with pace-bowling all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Nitish Reddy ruled out before the matches began. During the preceding T20I series, fast-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana also suffered a hamstring injury, preventing him from participating in the ODI matches.
The injury concerns continued during the ODI series, with Washington Sundar experiencing hamstring discomfort in the second match and Jasprit Bumrah suffering an impact injury in the same game. Bumrah’s absence from the series decider further highlighted India’s concerns over maintaining a settled combination and ensuring player availability.

Gill said the repeated fitness setbacks were a matter of concern, pointing out that several players from the original squad were unavailable by the end of the series. He questioned whether the team was missing important steps in managing player fitness, as frequent injuries have forced changes in combinations after almost every match.
The Indian captain stressed that the demands of a World Cup campaign require players to remain available for an extended period. With the 2027 ODI World Cup expected to involve teams playing multiple matches in succession, Gill said players must be capable of handling long tournaments and maintaining consistent fitness throughout the competition.
Gill added that the team faces difficult decisions when players report fitness issues shortly before matches. He said improving overall fitness standards within the group will be important as India prepares for future challenges. The team’s next ODI assignment will be a series against the West Indies, beginning on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram.
