Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya Back; Rinku Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal Left Out of India Squad
India announces a 15-member T20I squad against South Africa, blending experience and new talent ahead of the T20 World Cup.
India unveiled a powerful 15-member squad on Wednesday for the five-match T20I series against South Africa starting December 9, kicking off their official defence of the 2024 T20 World Cup crown with the 2026 mega-event now just months away. Suryakumar Yadav continues to lead, while Shubman Gill returns as vice-captain after recovering from a neck injury, marking a clear signal of the selectors’ long-term leadership plans.
Hardik Pandya’s comeback after a two-month quadriceps injury is the biggest boost. Fresh from an unbeaten 77 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the all-rounder instantly restores balance, depth in the middle order, and a proven death-bowling option. Jasprit Bumrah also returns to spearhead the pace attack alongside Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, giving India their full-strength new-ball pairing for the first time since the 2024 World Cup final.
The top order looks settled with Abhishek Sharma and Gill set to open, Tilak Varma at No. 3, and Suryakumar at No. 4—a lineup that offers left-right combinations and explosive intent. Sanju Samson remains the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter, with Jitesh Sharma as backup, while Shivam Dube holds his place as the spin-hitting enforcer and sixth bowling option.

Surprises in omission: Rinku Singh, despite his reputation as a finisher, misses out after inconsistent domestic form, and Yashasvi Jaiswal is overlooked despite being part of the 2024 title-winning squad. The spin department is loaded with Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and the recalled Varun Chakaravarthy—underlining India’s focus on variety for turning tracks in Dharamsala and Lucknow.
With only ten T20Is remaining before the home World Cup (co-hosted with Sri Lanka in Feb-Mar 2026), chief selector Ajit Agarkar called this series “crucial auditions”. The venues—Cuttack, Mullanpur, Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad—will test bench strength, death-over plans, and middle-order flexibility against a South African side eager to rebuild post their own transitional phase.
Hardik’s fitness, Gill’s form after injury, and how Suryakumar manages an embarrassment of bowling riches will dominate headlines. For Indian fans, this is the first real glimpse of the core that will attempt to become the first team to retain a T20 World Cup on home soil. Game on.
