Why Did BCCI Replace Rohit Sharma With Shubman Gill As ODI Captain?
BCCI names Shubman Gill as India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma for the team’s future strategy.
In a pivotal leadership transition, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named young batter Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Indian ODI team for the upcoming tour of Australia, replacing Rohit Sharma. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, addressing a press conference in Ahmedabad following India's dominant Test win over the West Indies, described the decision as a "tough call" driven by the "interest of the team" and the need to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The move signals a strategic shift toward grooming the 25-year-old opener for greater responsibilities, with Shreyas Iyer appointed as vice-captain, while Rohit and Virat Kohli return to the 50-over fold after a six-month hiatus.
Agarkar emphasised the logistical challenges of managing three different captains across formats, calling it "practically impossible" in terms of planning and continuity. "We don't play too many ODIs, and we needed to give the next guy enough time," he stated, noting that India's last ODI outing was the Champions Trophy in March, with the next not until October 19.
Rohit, who led India to victory in that tournament—his final assignment in the role—was informed of the change, though Agarkar kept details of their discussion private, saying it remained "between him and the selection committee." The selector acknowledged the emotional weight of the decision, adding, "Even if he had not won, it would have been a difficult decision. But sometimes you have to look forward, where you stand, [and] the interests of the team, etc."
Gill, already India's Test captain since assuming the role earlier this year, steps up after serving as vice-captain in ODIs and deputising for Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is during the recent Asia Cup. His rapid rise reflects the BCCI's faith in his tactical acumen and composure, honed through leading India to a 2-2 draw in the gruelling five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series against England.
Agarkar highlighted the importance of giving Gill ample exposure before the 2027 World Cup, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, to foster leadership continuity. Iyer's elevation as deputy aligns with his recent resurgence in white-ball cricket, despite opting out of red-ball formats to manage workload.

The 15-member ODI squad blends youth and experience: Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (VC), Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (WK), and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Notably, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODIs to manage his workload, while Yashasvi Jaiswal earns a recall after consistent T20I showings.
The three-match series, scheduled for Sydney (October 19), Adelaide (October 22), and Melbourne (October 25), precedes a five-match T20I leg led by Suryakumar Yadav, with Gill as his deputy. This tour serves as a crucial litmus test for the revamped leadership, as India eyes a strong buildup to future ICC events amid a packed calendar.
