Shreyas Iyer Makes Encouraging Comeback as He Resumes Training After Serious Spleen Injury

Shreyas Iyer resumes training after spleen injury, aiming for return in January 2026.

India’s promising middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has resumed training following a serious spleen injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025. The injury occurred when Iyer landed awkwardly while attempting a diving catch, leading to internal bleeding and a laceration to his spleen. He underwent a minor surgical procedure in Sydney, after which his condition stabilized and he was discharged earlier this month.

Under continuous medical supervision by specialists both in Sydney and back home in India, Iyer has gradually progressed in his recovery. Recently, he posted an encouraging update on social media showing himself exercising on a stationary bike, signaling positive steps toward regaining full fitness. Medical experts estimate a minimum two-month layoff due to the critical role of the spleen in filtering blood and supporting the immune system.

Due to the ongoing recovery process, Iyer was not selected for India’s upcoming white-ball series against South Africa, scheduled to start on November 30, but he is expected to be fit for the home T20I series against New Zealand in January 2026. Before the injury, he was appointed vice-captain of the ODI side when Shubman Gill took over the leadership role.

The injury moment was a significant scare for Indian cricket, with the BCCI and medical teams closely monitoring Iyer in intensive care initially and providing round-the-clock care. His gradual return to training is seen as a positive sign for Team India, reinforcing hopes that the talented batter will soon be back contributing to India’s campaign in the white-ball formats.

As Iyer’s rehabilitation continues steadily, the cricketing fraternity remains optimistic about his full recovery and return to competitive action in the coming months, bolstering India’s middle order ahead of crucial international fixtures.
